Fluoride treatments may be something you have heard about in conjunction with preventive dentistry. Fluoride in general is commonly associated with dentistry, because of the mineral’s natural ability to help prevent cavities, which has led to fluoridated water, toothpastes, and other products. Some people have become concerned about fluorosis, a condition that causes changes in the appearance of teeth, generally in children’s teeth as they develop. Despite this, fluoride treatments are commonly used for their effectiveness and tend to have a low risk of causing problems if handled correctly.
What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. In the twentieth century, researchers discovered that fluoride could help replenish your enamel, which is mostly made of minerals, strengthening it in order to help prevent cavities. This discovery led to fluoride being purposefully added to the water in specific doses. Ingesting fluoride typically only helps children whose teeth are still developing prevent cavities. However, overexposure can cause fluorosis in children (the condition can only afflict teeth still in development at the time), but it can be prevented by following certain precautions, such as not letting your children swallow fluoridated toothpaste.
The Purpose of Fluoride Treatments
While ingesting fluoride generally does not help adults, applying fluoride treatments directly to your teeth can help. The mineral has been added to toothpastes, mouth rinse, gels, and varnishes, and we can help you find the right product for you or your children if you need extra fluoride protection. We also offer treatments that we can perform during your regular dental cleaning, which involve applying the mineral directly to your teeth, or using trays filled with fluoride gel that will be placed over your teeth for a time.
